Taiwan - Eternal Spring Shrine

Eternal Spring Shrine, also called Changchun Shrine (traditional Chinese: 長春祠; simplified Chinese: 长春祠; pinyin: Chángchūn cí; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tiông-chhun-sû; literally "Ancestral shrine of Eternal, or Long, Spring"; 24°9′40.07″N 121°36′8.03″ECoordinates: 24°9′40.07″N 121°36′8.03″E), is a landmark and a memorial shrine complex in Taroko National Park in Taiwan, in Hualian County near town of Xiulin. It is one of the major picturesque points of the park, with the view of the mountains and the waterfall, and one of the main memorials for veterans.
It was planned for construction in 1958 while the Central Cross-Island Highway was built nearby. It commemorates the memory of 212 veterans who died while constructing the highway (1956—1960).
The name of the temple comes from the Changchun Falls that never stop running.[1] The Shrine is located right above the waterfall streams.
Drive from the west exit of the Changchun Tunnel of the Central Cross-Island Highway, then turn south(left) and go along the old Central Cross-Island Highway to the car park next to Liwu River, and you can see the Changchun (Eternal Spring) Shine which commemorates the 226 personnel (military veterans) who died during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway (1956~1960). Spring water adjacent by the Eternal Spring Shine flows all year round, and the Highway Bureau named it after "Changchun Falls." It is now scenic spot with special significance on the Central Cross-Island Highway.
In 1987 the cliff by the rivers collapse and destroyed the pavilion next to the Eternal Spring Shine. After 10 years it was restored and is now open to the public again. that the back of the Eternal Spring Shine there are stairs leading to Guanyin Cave, Taroko Tower, Bell Tower (the highest point), and across a suspension bridge to Changuang Temple (Zen monastery). The river valley next to the Changuang Temple has a bottle gourd shape, and it is named thereafter as Bottle Gourd Valley (Hu-lu Gu). The trail is a 1.3km/085mile leisurely walk will take 50 minutes to an hour for the entire loop. The trail is quite steep and visitors should stay off the trail on rainy days.Start it from the Chanhuang Temple will be less strenuous.
This shrine was built in rememberance for all the brave warriors whom had died on building the expressway.Vistors love taking photo ,composing their hand at the end of the waterfal, which represent collecting the wealth from it.

Hehuanshan (Chinese: 合歡山; pinyin: Héhuān Shān; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ha̍p-hoan-soaⁿ; also called Joy Mountain) is a 3,416 metres (11,207 ft) high mountain in Central Taiwan. The peak lies on the boundaries of Nantou and Hualien counties and is within the Taroko Gorge National Park. Hehuanshan is a popular destination for the local people of central Taiwan. The 3,421-metre East Peak and 3,422-metre North Peak of Hehuanshan are actually both higher than the main peak.
Snow, rare in the rest of Taiwan, is relatively common on the mountain during winter months. The Hehuanshan Road leads most of the way up the mountain to Wuling, a saddle between the Main Peak and the East Peak of Hehuanshan. Wuling is the highest point on the island of Taiwan accessible by public roads.
There was at one point[when?] a ski lift on the mountain, but later, due to the inconsistency of snowfall, the lift was removed.
From the Hehuanshan Road, a trail about one kilometer long leads to the summit of the main peak. At the summit, there is a weather station.
Hehuanshan is part of the Central Mountain Range (中央山脈) that makes up the backbone of Taiwan.
The Hehuanshan Road is currently the only paved road leading across the Central Mountains from Taichung City to Hualien via the famous Taroko Gorge. The Central Cross-Island Highway, which originally crossed the mountains north of Hehuanshan, was damaged during the September 21, 1999 Earthquake and had been under repair for five years afterwards. But prior to its re-opening disaster struck again in form of a typhoon and it was decided to keep it closed indefinitely.
The Hehuanshan Road leads up from Puli in central Nantou past Wushe (Ren-ai) and Chingjing Farm up to Wuling. Wuling, at 3,275 metres above sea level, is the highest automobile pass in Taiwan. The road is narrow and winding throughout, and is considered a dangerous and difficult road by many drivers. This road often becomes clogged in winter, when many locals travel up the mountain to see snow. Recently, after several incidents, buses and large trucks were barred from this stretch of road

合歡山，又名合歡主峰，是台灣百岳之一，位在花蓮縣與南投縣的交界處。由於周邊係由七座山峰所串連，與其合稱合歡群峰，是台灣主要河流大甲溪、濁水溪和立霧溪的分水嶺。合歡山冬季白雪皚皚，素有「雪鄉」之稱；春夏季玉山矮箭竹草原與玉山杜鵑、紅毛杜鵑花叢，景色宜人。合歡山區有合歡山莊與松雪樓提供住宿，位於台14甲線33K，公路旁設有展望台可遠眺奇萊群峰，而該地也是攀登合歡東峰、合歡尖山、石門山與中央山脈北三段的登山口。
合歡群峰的高度分別是：合歡主峰（3,417公尺）、合歡山北峰（3,422公尺）、合歡山東峰（3,421公尺）、合歡山西峰（3,145公尺）、石門山（3,237公尺）、石門北峰（3,278公尺）、合歡尖山（3,217公尺）（前五座更名列台灣百岳之中）。在合歡主峰設有三等三角點6388號。在公路尚未闢建時，攀登合歡群峰原為需耗時至少三晝夜才能攻頂，隨著中橫公路的興建需要，便將霧社供應線循合歡越嶺古道切過，如今自山腳埔里市區出發，駕車僅需2小時可達，高山郊化的現象帶來自然環境有莫大影響。

Situated between Heren and Chongde on the Su-Hua Highway, Qingshui Cliff is a big formed by Chongde, Qingshui and Heping mountain coastal cliffs. Creating a magnificent scene, it stretches more than 21km and rises vertically from the Pacific Ocean, with an average height of over 800m. This section of cliff is composed of gneiss and marble. It has risen straight up on the eastern coast of Taiwan for thousands of years. The route along the Qingshui Cliff is the only coastal road in Taroko National Park. The site of the Qingshui Cliff was designated in 1953 by the Taiwan government as one of the island's "Eight Wonders."
Among these cliffs, the east-south cliff of Mt. Qingshui is the steepest. The cliff facing the sea is 5km long and is very spectacular. Driving a car between cliff and the boundless ocean it almost feels like you are flying. The enormous cliff above combined with the boundless ocean below, reminding us of the hardships faced by the workers who built the road.
Most sections of current Su-Hua highway were rebuilt using a new tunnel boring method to widen the roads. The old Su-Hua Highway coastal road along the edge of Qingshui Cliff has become another tranquil and fascinating sight-seeing path. When you walk on the old road and observe the quiet mountain range, look down to the waves crashing and feel the breeze, you will feel just like you are in a corridor in the sky.

蘇花公路之險峻,工程之艱鉅中外皆知,尤其清水斷崖段更甚,看著垂直的斷崖令人腳底發麻,但整段公路風景最秀麗與壯觀也在此,所以行車也是最具危險的 ,為改善行車安全與常崩塌落石造成的維修困難,目前已開鑿幾座穿過岩壁的隧道,避過了這些路段,但蘇花的美景也隨之不容易在行車中見到,舊有的道路也 隨之封閉,只有是有心人懂得將車停妥步行去一探舊路之驚險與美景,否則大眾是無緣一見的,真切希望相關單位能改善這些路段的安全措施,能讓蘇花美景再 現.......

Yehliu (Chinese: 野柳; pinyin: Yěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung.
The cape, known by geologists as the Yehliu Promontory, forms part of the Taliao Miocene Formation. It stretches approximately 1,700 meters into the ocean and was formed as geological forces pushed Datun Mountain (大屯山) out of the sea.[1]
A distinctive feature of the cape is the hoodoo stones that dot its surface. These shapes can be viewed at the Yeliu Geopark operated by the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration. A number of rock formations have been given imaginative names based on their shapes. The most well-known is the "The Queen's Head" (女王頭), an iconic image in Taiwan and an unofficial emblem for the town of Wanli. Other formations include "The Fairy Shoe", "The Bee Hive", "The Ginger Rocks" and "The Sea Candles."
In 2003 , an ecological survey team in Yehliu came across a rock resembling a crouching leopard. Due to the tidal cycles and landform changes,this paculiarly shaped rock formation is visible only 18days each year when the tide is at the lowest level on the 1st through 3rd and the 15th through 17th in the 3rd,4th,5th lunar months.

Niushan Huting (牛山呼庭) is a private spot along East Coast line of Taiwan. It’s about forty minutes ride south from Hualien City. It’s a great place to see the great view Pacific Ocean and Coastal Mountain Range with nobody disturbing you. You can sit on the shore and relieve yourself from stressful busy life. You can have a cup of coffee in the café and chat with your friends leisurely. You can appreciate some lovely wood decorations in the garden. Most importantly, you are supposed learn the spirit of this spot: slowing down your pace and doing nothing. That’s why you are travelling here.

Shifen waterfall (traditional Chinese:十分瀑布) is a scenic waterfall perching between Dahua and Shifen Stations on the Pingxi Line and located in the Shifen Scenic Area in Pingxi District, New Taipei City. Shifen Waterfall is a block waterfall that is 15 to 20 meters high and 40 meters wide. As a cascade waterfall similar to Niagara Falls, where the bedrock slopes in the opposite direction of the water flow, Shifen Waterfall is known as “Taiwan’s Niagara Falls” and is the largest waterfall along the Pingxi Line. Torrents of water tumble down thunderously from the precipice into the deep pool beneath, creating a breathtaking and mesmerizing sight. Because the Shifen Waterfall is shrouded in mist for the majority of the year, iridescent rainbows often appear against a clear sky when the sun shines on the droplets of the waterfall. For this reason, Shifen Waterfall is also called the “Rainbow Pond.” More often than not, visitors to Shifen Waterfall cannot help feeling great awe for this spectacular natural phenomenon.
This waterfall falls on residential ground currently and the owner of this land collect entry fee from visitors , making substantial amount of money. Accordingly to my tour guide , there is plan by the government to collect back this piece of land and the entry will be free therefore.

Tamsui [1] (淡水, or Danshui, Danshuei, Tamshui) is a smaller city to the north of Taipei that was the center of shipping and commerce in northern Taiwan in the 19th century. The city is still popular with visitors from Taipei and boasts many historical attractions, and is a popular location for viewing the sunset.
The town calls itself by the English name "Tamsui"[2], but the Taipei MRT system calls it by its Mandarin Chinese name, transliterated as "Danshui". "Tamsui" probably comes from the town's name in the Taiwanese language.
As of late August 2011, MRT has begun to replace "Danshui" with "Tamsui" in its system. You can currently see both names appear on stations, maps, as well as trains.
2012 May update: Tamsui is now the only written name used in the MRT system but Danshuei can still be found on tourist advertisement around Taipei and in Tamsui. The English announcements in the MRT still call out Danshuei.

Until the 1950's, Jiufen was a prosperous gold mining town. The town went into sharp decline when mining was discontinued. The quaint streets, tea houses and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean saved it from becoming yet another anonymous mining ghost town. Jiufen is now a popular tourist destination for Taipeites eager to relive scenes from the past. It has provided the setting for several period movies. For example, Hou Hsiao-hsien's film A City of Sadness, which won the Golden Lion award at the 1989 Venice Film Festival.
The town of Jiufen is built into the side of the hills slightly inland from the Pacific Ocean coastline. The main area of interest to visitors are the town's historic commercial district which is covered by two pedestrian streets: Jishan Street (基山街, which runs along the ridge line), and Shuchi (Shuqi) Street (豎崎路, which runs up and down the slope of the hill). The area is small enough to cover on foot.

Shifen waterfall (traditional Chinese:十分瀑布) is a scenic waterfall perching between Dahua and Shifen Stations on the Pingxi Line and located in the Shifen Scenic Area in Pingxi District, New Taipei City. Shifen Waterfall is a block waterfall that is 15 to 20 meters high and 40 meters wide. As a cascade waterfall similar to Niagara Falls, where the bedrock slopes in the opposite direction of the water flow, Shifen Waterfall is known as “Taiwan’s Niagara Falls” and is the largest waterfall along the Pingxi Line. Torrents of water tumble down thunderously from the precipice into the deep pool beneath, creating a breathtaking and mesmerizing sight. Because the Shifen Waterfall is shrouded in mist for the majority of the year, iridescent rainbows often appear against a clear sky when the sun shines on the droplets of the waterfall. For this reason, Shifen Waterfall is also called the “Rainbow Pond.” More often than not, visitors to Shifen Waterfall cannot help feeling great awe for this spectacular natural phenomenon.
This waterfall falls on residential ground currently and the owner of this land collect entry fee from visitors , making substantial amount of money. Accordingly to my tour guide , there is plan by the government to collect back this piece of land and the entry will be free therefore.

Taiwan,officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a state in East Asia. Originally based in mainland China, the Republic of China now governs the island of Taiwan (formerly known as Formosa), which makes up over 99% of its territory,[f] as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands.
Yehliu (Chinese: 野柳; pinyin: Yěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung.
The cape, known by geologists as the Yehliu Promontory, forms part of the Taliao Miocene Formation. It stretches approximately 1,700 meters into the ocean and was formed as geological forces pushed Datun Mountain (大屯山) out of the sea.[1]
A distinctive feature of the cape is the hoodoo stones that dot its surface. These shapes can be viewed at the Yeliu Geopark operated by the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration. A number of rock formations have been given imaginative names based on their shapes. The most well-known is the "The Queen's Head" (女王頭), an iconic image in Taiwan and an unofficial emblem for the town of Wanli. Other formations include "The Fairy Shoe", "The Bee Hive", "The Ginger Rocks" and "The Sea Candles."

About Marina Bay Sands
Marina Bay Sands (traditional Chinese: 濱海灣金沙; simplified Chinese: 滨海湾金沙) is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore. Developed by Las Vegas Sands, it is billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at S$8 billion, including cost of the prime land.[1][2]
With the casino complete, the resort features a 2,561-room hotel, a 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) convention-exhibition centre, the 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m2) The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, an iconic ArtScience museum, two large theatres, seven "celebrity chef" restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, an ice skating rink, and the world's largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340m-long SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150m infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world's largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67m.[3][4] The 20-hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie Architects. The local architect of record was Aedas Singapore, and engineering was provided by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP). The main contractor was Ssangyong Engineering and Construction.[5]
Originally set to open in 2009, Las Vegas Sands faced delays caused by escalating costs of material and labour shortages from the onset. The severe global financial crisis also pressured the company to delay its projects elsewhere to complete the integrated resort.[6] Although Marina Bay Sands has been compared on scale and development costs to MGM's CityCenter, the latter is a mixed-use development, with condominium properties (comprising three of the seven main structures) being sold off.[7][8]
The resort was officially opened with a two-day celebration on 23 June 2010 at 3.18 pm, after a partial opening (which included the casino) on 27 April 2010.[9] The SkyPark opened a day later on 24 June 2010. The theatres were completed in time for the first performance by Riverdance on 30 November 2010. The floating pavilions are still being built and are expected to be fully completed by 2011. The indoor skating rink, which uses artificial ice, opened to a performance by Michelle Kwan on 18 December 2010. The ArtScience Museum opened to the public and the debut of a 13-minute light, laser and water spectacle called Wonder Full on 19 February 2011 marked the full completion of the entire Integrated Resort.
The grand opening of Marina Bay Sands was held on 17 February 2011. It also marked the opening of the seven celebrity chef restaurants. The highly-anticipated Broadway musical The Lion King debuted on 3 March 2011.[10] The last portion of the Marina Bay Sands, the floating pavilions, were finally opened to the public when the two tenants (Louis Vuitton and Pangaea Club) opened on 18 September 2011 and 22 September 2011 respectively.

The river is now part of the Marina Reservoir after damming the Singapore River at its outlet to the sea to create a new reservoir of freshwater. While damming this area would create a valuable source of fresh water for the tiny city-state, it would have prevented the docking of ocean-going ships at the Singapore River which was arguably the original reason Singapore came into existence. The Merlion (Malay: Singa-Laut) is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot of Singapore. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura — meaning "lion city" or "kota singa".
The symbol was designed by Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997[1] and has been its trademarked symbol since 20 July 1966. Although the STB changed their logo in 1997, the STB Act continues to protect the Merlion symbol.[2] Approval must be received from STB before it can be used. The Merlion appears frequently on STB-approved souvenirs.
The merlion— a mythical creature with the body of a fish and the head of a lion— occurs in a number of different artistic traditions. Lions with fishtails can be found on Indian murals at Ajanta and Mathura, and on Etruscan coins of the Hellenistic period. About Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a waterside building located on six hectares of waterfront land alongside Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River, purpose-built to be the centre for performing arts for the island nation of Singapore. Taking its name from the nearby Esplanade, it contains a Concert Hall which seats about 1,600 and a Theatre with a capacity of about 2,000 for the performing arts.
The library@esplanade is located on the third floor of the building. There are outdoor performing centres, and retail and food space at the Esplanade Mall. There is an outdoor open space on the fourth floor of the building, which is the highest point open to the public.
As one of the world’s busiest arts centres, Esplanade offers a staggering range of programmes which caters to all audiences. In addition to Esplanade Presents performances, other offerings by diverse presenters complement the programmes at the centre, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Resorts World Sentosa is an integrated resort on the island of Sentosa, off the southern coast of Singapore. The key attractions include one of Singapore's two casinos, a Universal Studios theme park and Marine Life Park, which includes the world's largest oceanarium.
The S$6.59 billion (US$4.93 billion) resort is developed by Genting Singapore, listed on the SGX. It is one of the world's most expensive casino properties, after Marina Bay Sands. The resort occupies over 49 hectares (121 acres) of land and, when fully open, will employ more than 10,000 people directly. Resorts World Sentosa is a sister resort to Resorts World Genting, Pahang, Malaysia and Resorts World Manila, Philippines.
The soft launch of the first four hotels took place on 20 January 2010,[1] with the FestiveWalk shopping mall following on February 1.[2] The casino opened on 14 February the first auspicious day of the Chinese New Year.[3] The Maritime Experiential Museum will open on October 15, 2011. About Marina Bay Sands
Marina Bay Sands (traditional Chinese: 濱海灣金沙; simplified Chinese: 滨海湾金沙) is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore. Developed by Las Vegas Sands, it is billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at S$8 billion, including cost of the prime land.[1][2]
With the casino complete, the resort features a 2,561-room hotel, a 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) convention-exhibition centre, the 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m2) The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, an iconic ArtScience museum, two large theatres, seven "celebrity chef" restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, an ice skating rink, and the world's largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340m-long SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150m infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world's largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67m.[3][4] The 20-hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie Architects. The local architect of record was Aedas Singapore, and engineering was provided by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP). The main contractor was Ssangyong Engineering and Construction.[5]
Originally set to open in 2009, Las Vegas Sands faced delays caused by escalating costs of material and labour shortages from the onset. The severe global financial crisis also pressured the company to delay its projects elsewhere to complete the integrated resort.[6] Although Marina Bay Sands has been compared on scale and development costs to MGM's CityCenter, the latter is a mixed-use development, with condominium properties (comprising three of the seven main structures) being sold off.[7][8]
The resort was officially opened with a two-day celebration on 23 June 2010 at 3.18 pm, after a partial opening (which included the casino) on 27 April 2010.[9] The SkyPark opened a day later on 24 June 2010. The theatres were completed in time for the first performance by Riverdance on 30 November 2010. The floating pavilions are still being built and are expected to be fully completed by 2011. The indoor skating rink, which uses artificial ice, opened to a performance by Michelle Kwan on 18 December 2010. The ArtScience Museum opened to the public and the debut of a 13-minute light, laser and water spectacle called Wonder Full on 19 February 2011 marked the full completion of the entire Integrated Resort.
The grand opening of Marina Bay Sands was held on 17 February 2011. It also marked the opening of the seven celebrity chef restaurants. The highly-anticipated Broadway musical The Lion King debuted on 3 March 2011.[10] The last portion of the Marina Bay Sands, the floating pavilions, were finally opened to the public when the two tenants (Louis Vuitton and Pangaea Club) opened on 18 September 2011 and 22 September 2011 respectively.
About Garden by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay consists of three distinctive waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, spanning a total of 101 hectares. They are set in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, encircling the Marina Reservoir like a green necklace. The Gardens will complement the array of attractions around Marina Bay.
Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government that further transforms Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’, in which the city is woven into a green and floral tapestry. This aims to raise the quality of life in Singapore with a more holistic and all-encompassing programme that enhances greenery and flora in the city. First announced to the public by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally in August 2005, Gardens by the Bay will become Singapore’s premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.
An international competition for the design of the master plan was held in January 2006 to elicit the best designs for the Gardens. This attracted more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms from 24 countries, from which two firms – Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter – were eventually awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens respectively.
The Gardens are being developed in phases. Bay South is currently being constructed and is slated to be completed by June 2012. Bay East has been developed as an interim park in support of the Youth Olympic Games 2010, and is scheduled to open to the public in late 2011 or early 2012. The full master plan implementation of Bay East and the development of Bay Central are part of the next phase of development.

The river is now part of the Marina Reservoir after damming the Singapore River at its outlet to the sea to create a new reservoir of freshwater. While damming this area would create a valuable source of fresh water for the tiny city-state, it would have prevented the docking of ocean-going ships at the Singapore River which was arguably the original reason Singapore came into existence. The dam is known as Marina Barrage.[citation needed]
Whereas the original mouth of the Singapore River emptied into Singapore Straits and its southern islands before major land reclamation took place, the Singapore River now empties into Marina Bay - an area of water partially enclosed by the reclamation work. The Port of Singapore is now located to the west of the island, using most of the south-west coast, and passenger ships to Singapore now typically berth at the Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront. Thus the Singapore River's economic role has shifted away from one that of trade, towards more a role accommodated for tourism and aesthetics for the commercial zone which encloses it.

The Merlion (Malay: Singa-Laut) is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot of Singapore. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura — meaning "lion city" or "kota singa".
The symbol was designed by Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997[1] and has been its trademarked symbol since 20 July 1966. Although the STB changed their logo in 1997, the STB Act continues to protect the Merlion symbol.[2] Approval must be received from STB before it can be used. The Merlion appears frequently on STB-approved souvenirs.
The merlion— a mythical creature with the body of a fish and the head of a lion— occurs in a number of different artistic traditions. Lions with fishtails can be found on Indian murals at Ajanta and Mathura, and on Etruscan coins of the Hellenistic period. Merlions, or ‘heraldic sea- lions’, are an established element of Western heraldry, and have been used on the coat of arms of the cities of Portsmouth and Great Yarmouth in the United Kingdom; the City of Manila; and the East India Company.

About Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a waterside building located on six hectares of waterfront land alongside Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River, purpose-built to be the centre for performing arts for the island nation of Singapore. Taking its name from the nearby Esplanade, it contains a Concert Hall which seats about 1,600 and a Theatre with a capacity of about 2,000 for the performing arts.
The library@esplanade is located on the third floor of the building. There are outdoor performing centres, and retail and food space at the Esplanade Mall. There is an outdoor open space on the fourth floor of the building, which is the highest point open to the public.
As one of the world’s busiest arts centres, Esplanade offers a staggering range of programmes which caters to all audiences. In addition to Esplanade Presents performances, other offerings by diverse presenters complement the programmes at the centre, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
Esplanade’s programmes are broadly organised around key areas – the community and access programmes form the foundation of activities at the centre, collaborations with mainly local arts groups help develop the industry, while leading international productions offer innovative programmes in the major arts genres. These programmes are presented in different festivals and series designed to appeal to the broadest range of audiences.
Esplanade's in-house programming team presents over 14 festivals and 20 on-going series throughout the year. As a centre for everyone, the programmes range from PLAYtime! for 2 to 4 year olds, Bitesize - a monthly talk and workshop taster series for a range of Arts topics, to At The Concourse - a non-ticketed music series that runs everyday of the year, as well as Coffee Morning Afternoon Tea - concerts featuring nostalgic English and Chinese golden hits by veteran local artists.
